Six Tips to Improve Your Life For 2019

A new year means a new, fresh start! Coming into 2019, I was very excited to get this year going and be done with 2018. Last year, I learned a lot, grew a lot and went through a lot, and ready to be done. I had so many plans, goals, ideas and new habits that I want to implement this year in order to start the year off strong. I figured it was about time to reset some things! Here are my six tips to improve your life in 2019!

#1: Decluterring your space

I’m certain that most of us have a room, closet, that one drawer in the kitchen, and maybe even a garage full of junk and stuff we don’t need or no longer use. We think that our space isn’t big enough or we spend money on buying more storage, a bigger house or drawer. The answer is not spending money we don’t have, it’s about cleaning your s**t out! I recently cleaned out my closet and it amazed me at how much I needed to get rid of. You see you really don’t know how much crap you have until you get down in there deep and start getting down girl! After my cleaning, I felt a certain relief about it.

Now, it can be overwhelming, cause anxiety, cause arguments between spouses and be time-consuming trying to search for something you know is there, but can’t find due to your mess. De-cluttering and tidying up a space can truly help clear out your mental as well. The act of physically removing items can prove to be very beneficial.

Best-selling author of the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo, and her Netflix series, Tidying Up, (check this out if you haven’t) takes people through an intense de-cluttering process in a series of steps, teaching them new ways to do normal things, like folding better to make more space and getting rid of clothing that you can’t fit or wear anymore. I’ve learned that parting with things can be very difficult for some people because of the emotional attachment that is sometimes involved.

So, if you feel maybe you might be a micro-hoarder, you should probably give this book a listen or watch her series.

#2: Social Media Detox

Next, I am sure some of you may remember the days when there was no social media and people actually talked to one another and people kept their business to themselves. If not, then I’m definitely dating myself! But in today’s age, however, there seems to be less interaction face to face, with more focus on social media.

In doing my research on this topic, I found that we can actually get addicted to social media. Can you believe that?

Social media is a psychological addiction and some of us overdose. That’s not healthy. I recommend doing a mini-detox where you take a break 24-72 hours of NO social media engagement or follow up. Now, I am understanding of the use of social media as a part of your business, but that should still be limited. It is ok to not be on social media. Don’t worry, the work and your followers will be there when you get back. This is something each of us needs and should take full advantage of.

#3: Email Dump

There’s nothing better than an email purge!

I’m embarrassed to say that right now I have approximately, 10,587 of unread emails. That’s insane. But, its my fault because I procrastinate. I’m not ashamed to admit that! Clearing out unnecessary emails, unsubscribing from emails (so it doesn’t fill up again) is freeing. Sometimes I hate checking my emails because I have so many and the thought of clearing them out gives me anxiety. But in order for that to go away, I have to get rid of the emails. Seems easy, but it’s not. I’ll update you guys on how it goes.

#: Whole Body Clean Out

This step actually involves bathing and the concept of this process is that when you step into the bath, in your old body and then step out, you are made anew and can begin with a fresh start.

  1. Set your environment. Make a bubble bath, light candles, get your favorite scrubby and essential oils misting.
  2. Step in the bath in your old self.
  3. Soak in the bath, for 10-20 minutes, cleansing yourself.
  4. Meditate and visualize on the goals, plans, and ideas you’ve set for yourself.
  5. Focus on ridding of the negative things.
  6. Once you feel that you have completed steps 4 & 5, it’s time to step out as the NEW YOU!

#5: People Dump

Everybody toxic MUST GO! That’s right if the people in your life (friends, family & followers) are not serving you good, they need to exit to the left.←

With close friends or family, it can be difficult to totally cut them out of your life, so here are some ways to do that:

  • Become unavailable more often
  • Stop caring what they think because their opinions don’t matter; the people giving them may be important to you, but in the end, it’s your life.
  • Reduce your engagement

Hopefully, they can take the hint and begin to get the feeling that ‘hey, something’s different about her.’ They may ask you about it, or they may not. If they do, just be honest. Most people are unaware of how obnoxious they are until someone tells them.

#6: Finanical Reset

Personally speaking, this is a major goal for myself. I found that I am back at a place financially that I haven’t been to, in a long time and I don’t like it. So I decided to adopt Dave Ramsey’s teachings on his, Total Money Makeover process and the “Baby Steps.”

To prepare me for this, I did a few things:

  • Printed my last 3 months bank statements, to review how much needless spending I was doing.
  • Next, I created a budget (I jumped to baby step 2, before starting my T.M.M.)
  • Listened to Dave Ramsey’s book, Total Money Makeover
  • Started working on baby step #1 which is saving a $1000 emergency fund.

If you need to start your own journey, I would highly recommend doing the above steps to get rolling. If you aren’t into making a budget, here is my template that I use. I’m a firm believer that money should be simple, so I created it to be that way.

One other option, is to utilize one of the plethora of phone apps available, to create your budget. A few I like are:

  1. Spendee Budget & Money Tracker;
  2. YNAB (You need a budget); and
  3. Clarity Money-Budget Manager

You should be excited about starting your year! You’re going to be able to achieve so much by doing this total reset. Have fun, find your clarity and make it a good year!
